After a five-year long wait, Microsoft has unveiled its new Windows Vista operating system for consumers.

Vista features a number of improvements, including better search functions and security. But while reviews are generally positive, experts say the system still has plenty of room for improvement.

"Vista has definitely made some giants leaps forward in terms of ease of use, in terms of security, in terms of a lot of things. Definitely better. Is it ideal? I don't think it’s ideal. They still have a long way to go,” said Jeremy Kaplan, Executive Editor of PC Magazine.

Vista also features an "Aero" glass interface that opens in translucent panes to show information below. The impressive 3D graphics are sure to grab the attention of early adopters like the gaming community.

Microsoft is betting big on Vista. The company has invested $6 billion in it and written 50 million lines of code. Company chairman Bill Gates says it’s the most secure operating system Microsoft has ever offered.

“We have a defender software, we have an automatic update capability so we're seeing way, way less problems,” says Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates.
