_44006494_shilpa203.jpgShilpa Shetty has been given an honorary degree for her handling of the Big Brother race row. The actress, 32, was awarded a doctorate of arts by Leeds Metropolitan University for her "dignity and poise".

Shilpa suffered racist bullying by other contestants in Channel 4's Celebrity BB show.

Jade Goody, former Miss Great Britain Danielle Lloyd and ex-S Club 7 singer Jo O'Meara were all accused of ganging up on the Indian actress.

The abuse sparked an international race row, with effigies burnt on Indian streets and the controversy being raised at the highest government levels.

The poise Shilpa showed during the entire episode has now been honoured by the Leeds university.

Vice Chancellor Professor Simon Lee told a graduation ceremony the actress was a distinguished and inspirational figure.
