July 25: Hyderabad Police are hunting for a physician who allegedly cheated his American wife to the tune of $148,000.

K.V. Rama Rao, a homeopathic physician who married Joy Wright four years ago in Hyderabad, had allegedly taken the money from her for investing in real estate but disappeared soon after, police said Wednesday.

Wright, 56, who works as an inspector with the Weights and Measures Department in Santa Clara, California, came all the way from the US to trace Rao as all her efforts to contact him over the phone had failed.

Realising that Rao has disappeared and she had been cheated, Wright lodged a complaint with Saroornagar police station here.

The homeopath no longer lives in Sri Vijyapuri Apartments in Chaitanyapuri locality where they had stayed together for a while after the marriage on July 30, 2001. 'I went to the apartment but came to know that he has shifted his residence,' Wright said.

She told newsmen that they came in touch through a common friend Deepak Reddy, who lives in Santa Clara. The friendship over the phone and Internet developed into love and they decided to marry. 'I came to Hyderabad and we got married on July 30, 2001,' said Wright. This was the second marriage for both of them.

Wright said that she left for the US after the marriage and got him a visa. Rao migrated to the US in July 2003 and she tried to get him a job as a security officer but he had no interest in working there. After staying there for two months, he returned to India, saying his daughter was ill.

Rao again went to the US in November 2003 and convinced Wright to give him $30,000 for investment in real estate. He returned to India after seven months.

In October 2004, Rao again asked Wright for $118,000 for a real estate business and promised to repay. 'He also wanted to build a hospital with that money. I mortgaged my house and gave him the money because I trusted him,' she said.

According to Wright, Rao started avoiding her since last year and all her efforts to contact him during the last few months yielded no results. She then decided to fly to Hyderabad to trace him. After making inquiries during the last two weeks, she lodged a complaint with the police, who have booked a case of cheating against Rao.
