| Hyderabad RTA opts for smart card system |

The Indian city of Hyderabad will become the latest location to introduce multi-application smart cards when its plans to roll out the technology become a reality later this year. The cards, which will serve as driving licence and vehicle registration documents, will be supported by a ‘three-tier’ online system for making transactions with the transport authorities. In addition to licensing and registration information, the cards will also store details of previous traffic offences, tax and insurance data and pollution details. Information stored on the cards will be read using hand-held readers. Government-run National Informatics Centre Services Incorporated (NICSI) is developing the software for the system and CMS Limited will create the interface. It also reports that an order for 400 smart card readers has been placed for use by enforcement agencies. |
