July 26: The State Police Department will soon get a helicopter for
reaching far-flung areas quickly and taking up search and rescue
operations during major incidents.
The Central Government has given its nod to the Police Department to acquire a chopper and orders have already been placed in this regard. The chopper, to be used for evacuating injured police personnel and civilians whenever there are major incidents, will be shared by the States affected by the Maoist problem, Director-General of Police M.A. Basith said. Mr. Basith who spoke about the developments in the department when some reporters met him on Wednesday said the department was, however, not in favour of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) as the cost-benefit ratio worked out to be very less. Moreover, the UAVs would be utilised by army for real time operations and would be helpful in areas which offer no scope for cover. |
