India's finest and most prestigious awards, the 54th Fair One Filmfare Awards 2006, presented for excellence in South India cinema is held  at the HICC, Hitex City, Hyderabad on 4th of August night. Often referred to as the "Indian Oscars", the event graced the best of South Indian Stars. This year remained the special occasion as the show also celebrated the completion of seven decades and more of south Indian cinema.

Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Roy and Abhisekh Bachchan were chief guests who sizzled at the function along with Arjun Rampal, Chiranjeevi, Venkatesh, Nagarjuna, Mammoty, AR Rehman, Punith Raj Kumar, Ravi Teja, Ramcharan Tej, Devi Sri Prasad, Genelia (Best Actress) Nayantara, Trisha, Parvati Melton, Charmi, Ramya Krishna, Tabu, Namita, Ileana, Mamta Mohan Das, Simran, Kamna Jatmalani, Sandhya (of Annavaram fame), Puri Jagannath, MS Raju, Dil Raju, Lawrence, K. Viswanath, Devi Sri Prasad, SP Balasubramanyam, KJ Yesudas, Vijay (Kollywood) were among the dignitaries who graced the occasion. Highlight is the presentation of Special Legend awards to MegaStar Chiranjeevi and Mamooty. Lifetime Achievement awards were given to P Sushila and Krishnam Raju on this occasion.

The function began at 8.00 pm, Chiranjeevi accompanied by his son Ramcharan Tej. Till 11.00 pm, the big gathering of guests and general gathering expected the arrival of Mahesh Babu, the Best Actor of th year, but it didn’t happen and Mahesh Babu wife Namrata Shirodkar received the Award from Arjun Rampal. Mahesh Babu couldn’t attend the event as his grandmother was stated to be in a critical condition. In a message, Mahesh Babu stated that Filmfare Award had made him even more humble. He dedicated the honor to his grandmother.

Big B Amitab Bachchan presented the Special Legend awards to Chiranjeevi and Mamooty. Later, he said that though he was taller physically, he would ever remain a dwarf when it comes to the stature of Southern stars. He had high praise for the social work undertaken by Chiranjeevi and Mamooty.

Accepting the ‘Legend Award’ from superstar Amitabh Bachchan an overwhelmed Chiranjeevi said, “We have derived inspiration from Amitabh Bachchan. I am just a student before him, who is like a headmaster”.


Puri Jagannath (Best Director), Genelia (Best Actress) and SP Balasubramanyam (Best Playback Singer), Lawrence (Best choreographer), S. Gopal Reddy (Best Cinematographer) and Ram (Best debut hero) were among the prominent recipients of the awards. heroine Genelia received the Filmfare Best Actress Award for the first time in her career.

Live performance of Simran, Mamta Mohandass and Devi Sri Prasad kept the gathering in good mood and made them glue to their seats till the announcement of awards.
